Coloradans are encouraged to apply now through April 30
DENVER, CO (March 23, 2026) – Even as Colorado closes out its warmest winter on record, the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS) is reminding residents that the Low-income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) provides critical benefits far beyond basic heating bills. With the application deadline of April 30, 2026 approaching, eligible Coloradans are encouraged to apply now to access long-term energy savings and assistance with emergency home repairs.
While the 2025-2026 season saw record-smashing temperatures across the state, home energy remains a significant expense. LEAP helps vulnerable Coloradans pay a portion of their winter home heating costs, freeing up household budgets for other essentials like groceries and rent. Perhaps more importantly, a LEAP approval unlocks secondary benefits, including weatherization services and emergency furnace repair or replacement.
“When I finally decided to take advantage of LEAP’s weatherization services, the results were life-changing,” said a LEAP client from Garfield County. “The audit resulted in a new furnace, sealed windows and doors and better insulation. My energy bills have dropped by nearly half, and my home is much safer.”
To date, more than 105,000 Coloradans have applied for LEAP this season. However, an estimated 80% of eligible residents still do not take advantage of the program. Eligible families can expect to receive between $200 and $1,000 in energy assistance depending on the type of heating fuel, household income and other factors.
“Many people think they shouldn't apply because the weather has been mild, but LEAP is about more than just a one-time payment,” says Maria Hopps, LEAP interim supervisor. “Between weatherization and emergency furnace support, we are helping families make their homes more efficient and safer for the long term. If you think you might be eligible, don't wait for a cold snap—apply now.”
To qualify, Colorado households must have an income up to 60% of the state median income. For a family of four, this equates to a monthly gross income of $6,938 (or $83,256 annually). Additionally, applicants must pay home heating costs directly to a utility company or as part of their rent and have at least one household member who is a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident.

- Phone: Call the HEAT HELP line at 1-866-HEAT-HELP (1-866-432-8435) to have an application mailed to you.
- In-Person: Visit your local county Department of Human Services office.
